With these ambitions in mind, we carefully consider the social, environmental and economic impacts of every business decision we make and activity we undertake. At Balta, we believe that focussing on sustainability is the only way forward to justify our mission.
Sustainable development goals (SDGs)
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations offer a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity – now and in the future. Our ambitions at Balta to do business in a way that benefits people and planet centre primarily around four of these SDGs.
Good health and well-being (SDG 3)
Our products contain low volumes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and we are aiming for a target of zero harmful chemicals. Our Balta home collection is Oeko-Tex certified for adherence to the strict criteria set out by the Greenpeace Detox regulations.
Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6)
We treat all of our wastewater and actively seek out new ways to improve the quality of our effluent. We have made major investments in multiple water purification installations at our Belgian sites. Our company also has a clear ambition to reduce water usage by 30% by 2030, and continues to collect rainwater for use by neighbouring farms during drought periods.
Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8)
Safety is our number one priority at Balta and ‘One Balta for Safety’ is a strategic project. We employ an international workforce and never differentiate between our employees. In addition to investing in safe working conditions for all, we also implement correct and fair labour agreements.
Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12)
Balta wants to recycle all of its production waste by 2030 by finding innovative ways to reduce, recycle and reuse it. Modulyss carpet tile waste generated during the cutting process is incorporated into the secondary product backings, and we regranulate polypropylene yarn waste, in addition to initiatives to come. We have been reporting on sustainability for a number of years and are planning for full compliance with GRI standards.
At Balta, we make every effort to care for our people, no matter how challenging the circumstances are. Without fail, we comply with all governmental regulations and ethical business guidelines and are more motivated than ever to improve our safety, diversity, and well-being performance at every level of our group.
Safety, well-being and empowerment
In doing so, we invest strongly in stress prevention and work motivation, providing challenging assignments, development opportunities and plenty of support. As a VisionZero company from our earliest beginnings, we integrate the three dimensions of safety, health and well-being into all levels of work.
Our CEO and Management Committee implemented a new vision on well-being and prevention in 2020, in line with our values and belief in employee empowerment. This vision strives for zero accidents among our own personnel as well as those of our stakeholders, and extends all the way to the consumer with the safety of our products through recognised certifications and labels such as CE marking, Green Label Plus, the GUT label, Cradle to Cradle, VOC labelling and more.
Balta is aware that the impacts of climate change may be felt through many of our business activities. To limit and prevent these risks, we actively investigate the use of more sustainable materials, improved production and transport, renewable energy sources and innovative recycling, waste management and reuse methods in order to support circularity and tackle the effects of climate change.
The way we achieve strong results is just as important as the results themselves. This is why Balta commits to ethical business practice and acting with integrity through a number of policies covering our legal, HR, finance, IT, HSE and procurement activities. These policies, which adhere to the most rigorous regulations and recommendations, give our employees the freedom and information to act in line with the highest ethical standards.
Our policies, training and awareness-generating activities begin from earliest employee onboarding and centre around our new code of conduct, which was created in 2020. Topics addressed include ethical, lawful and mindful behaviour in the contexts of cyber security and data protection, antitrust and measures to fight fraud, corruption and bribery.
